When normally designing creatures, I try to keep them 'real', so that even if the viewer does not notice it, I think about how it eats, how it moves, how it reproduces, how it has evolved. I use this approach so regularly that it has become intuitive, and as unlikely as it might sound, it is very difficult for me to design 'monsters' which exist simply for shock value. But in a dark Christmas holiday in 2003, trapped in a snowed-in ski resort with a crowd of racous high-school students, I let go. Out of sheer boredom, I sketched as many such "monsters" as possible. When I got home, I inked, scanned and digitally composited them into the Procession. Don't look for reason here, just enjoy. To view the Procession, click on the outline below. |
