Synchronous with the 2005 Istanbul Biennial, this video installation was executed with the assistance of The Marmara Hotels. With twenty-minute intervals, two 3x5 metre monitors on top of the building flashed the images of two enormous eyes, essentially transforming the structure into a towering figure that kept watch over the city. According to how you see it, this hulking monster can be many things. Perhaps it is a magnified version of the glass "evil eye" figures that traditionally protect buildings against ill fate, (known hereabouts as 'nazar') only on a metropolitan scale. Perhaps it is a throwback to the eye-engraved columns that kept watch over the City in Byzantine times. Or perhaps it is a much more modern sceptre, monitoring the urban jungle like a digital big brother, dark and unforgiving. |
